At the Russian CarX 2024 Automobile Industry Forum, Evgenia Tabakova, Avito Auto’s head of consumer marketing, published a report on the current needs of Russian second-hand car buyers. According to the report, the proportion of people in Russia who postponed car purchases increased in 2023, and this trend will continue in 2024. The current macro environment has not had a significant impact on car purchase plans. The following is a specific analysis:
Young buyers delay car purchases, but demand remains strong
The report pointed out that 41% of people aged 20 to 29 have postponed their car purchase plans. Additionally, approximately one-third of respondents purchased a vehicle within the past six months and did not sell their existing vehicle. The proportion of people who buy and sell a car at the same time increased to 47% from 43% last year.

The average age of used cars purchased in the past six months is 7 years, while buyers expect to use their cars for an average of 4 to 5 years. Most car buyers use their own funds to purchase, with consumer credit and auto loans ranking second and third respectively. It is worth noting that among buyers who purchase cars for more than 2 million rubles, 25% choose auto loans. For cars priced below 700,000 rubles, 21% of buyers prefer to use consumer credit.
Main motivation for buying a car
The main reasons people choose to buy used cars include: the previous vehicle's functions are outdated, they are more interested in other models, and as an alternative to public transportation. These factors reflect the dual needs of buyers in the used car market for functionality and personal preference.
