1. Basic Information
Georgia is located in the central and western part of the South Caucasus, bordering Russia to the north, Azerbaijan and Armenia to the southeast and south, Turkey to the southwest, and the Black Sea to the west. Its capital is Tbilisi, with a land area of about 69,700 square kilometers and a population of 3,688,600. In the first half of 2023, Georgia's GDP was US$13.764 billion, a year-on-year increase of 9.6%, and its per capita GDP was US$3,689. In 2023, the bilateral trade volume between China and Georgia reached US$2.04 billion, a year-on-year increase of 45.7%. Among them, China's exports to Georgia reached US$1.93 billion, and China imported US$110 million from Georgia. China mainly exports non-alloy steel flat-rolled products, machinery and equipment, vaccines and other immune products, rubber tires, etc. to Georgia: it mainly imports copper ore and concentrate, medical instruments and equipment, wine, unwrought aluminum, etc. from Georgia.
(II) Policies and regulations on the import of used cars
1. Import policy
Georgia only allows the import of left-hand drive vehicles, and vehicles do not need to undergo mandatory inspection. Temporary imports are duty-free, but a bank guarantee for the amount of VAT during the temporary import period (18% of the CIF value) must be provided; in 2023, the Georgian government announced that it will restrict the sale of cars produced before 2013 from 2024, and the emission standards of imported used cars must reach Euro 5 or above.
2. Tax policy
Vehicles imported into Georgia are subject to a 5% CIF tariff. According to the China-Georgia Free Trade Agreement, vehicles are exempted from tariffs when both the country of origin and the country of shipment are China. The value-added tax is 18%.
